Lighting is a huge part of our lives. In the home it plays and important part not only in the function of our homes and in helping us to see at night, but also in increasing the aesthetics of our homes.
There are many different types of lighting available and this can be functional, creative or a combination of both. In addition there are many methods of lighting to use such as downlighting, uplighting or recess lighting.
Lighting can cause a problem when it is excessive and in this case we refer to 'light pollution'. This is often seen as an orange or yellow cloud above some larger cities due to the amount of light being used (and wasted!). This not only makes it impossible to see the night sky, but can also have detrimental effects on the lives of animal and plant life that depend on the guidance of light for migration, feeding and navigation.
SAD is a condition that can occur in people during the winter months and has been linked to light (or a lack of it!). It is a depressive illness and a good number of sufferers have been shown to respond well to treatment with both light therapies and antidepressive medication. It is particularly prevalent in countries around the artic regions such as Iceland and Finland.
Lightening is an electrical charge that is builds up and is released in the atmosphere. It usually occurs when there is a thunderstorm though not always. There are many different types of lightening, some more usual than others. The most deadly to human life and structure is cloud to ground lightening and the most common is cloud to cloud lightening.
