Lighting - Setting the Mood in your Home
Lighting is a key part of the interior design of your home and there is an endless amount of lighting on offer.
You only need to look through the catalogue of a popular home or DIY store to find a baffling array of lights. Some are more practical and do not do much in the way of enhancing the appearance of your home, whereas others are like a piece of art of they're own!
Lighting will generally be catagorised depending on the type and amount of light it offers and will come as either:
Task lighting - this means that the light provided is very concentrated and designed to aid with a task, this may be a light to read with or maybe a light over a cooker hob for instance.
Accent lighting - this lighting is designed to be more decorative than functional and its purpose is really to highlight an item on display such as a painting or other element of interior design within the home.
General lighting - this type of lighting falls somewhere between the two described above and is usually a lamp or interior wall / ceiling light for instance.
As well as different types of lighting to use within the home, there are also different methods to use it:
Downlighting - this means that the light shines downwards from the source and is the most usual type of lighting within the home. The drawbacks of this can be excess 'glare' and an increased energy consumption.
Uplighting - this is less common and (unsurprisingly) shines the light upwards so it bounces of the ceilings. This helps to reduce glare and went through are period of being quite a fashionable lighting choice.
Recess lighting is also a popular lighting choice, especially in modern times, and describes the type of light that is set back into the ceiling or wall so that it appears 'flush' with it.
LED stands for light emitting diode and provides a surprising amount of light for such a little thing. They are often seen in the aisles of aircraft or cinemas and are even used on vehicles.
